Course Syllabus

  • Course Description: The goal of this course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) as well as the grammar and cultural norms of this language. This class will introduce students to the language and allow them to practice through various hands-on activities. Students will be expected to demonstrate their receptive and expressive knowledge of the subject through various methods. Students will be graded as such:

    1. 20% Classwork/Homework
    2. 30% Quizzes/Essays
    3. 30% Tests/Projects/Presentations
    4. 20% Participation

    Yearly Percentages

    1. 4 Quarters: 22.5% each
    2. Midterm: 5%
    3. Final Exam: 5%

    Textbooks and Materials Provided: 

    1. Signing Naturally Textbook for in class use
    2. Various Worksheets and printouts
    3. Hands on activities

    Use of Technology:

    1. Canva: a website students will use to record ASL videos for in class assignments and projects
    2. Teams: All assignments with due dates, examples and requirements will be posted for students to stay organized and to know what is expected
    3. Review Videos: will be posted in Teams and Canva before every quiz and unit test for students to review
    4. PowerPoint and Microsoft Word: will be used for various in class assignments and projects

    Materials Needed:

    1. Students need a folder to keep materials and handouts organized
    2. Students will need to bring a pen or pencil
    3. Laptops will be needed EVERYDAY to watch and record videos. Laptops are expected to be charged and ready for use as soon as class starts. A charger will not be provided for students to use in the event their laptops are not charged.

    Classroom Behavior and Expectations:

    1. Respect your classmates, teacher, materials and school
    2. Be sitting in your seat prepared for class (pencil/homework out on desk) every day when the bell rings
    3. Participate, you need to be engaged and hands on to learn a new language.
    4. No cell phones are to be used in class

    Make-Up Work: It is the students’ responsibility to find out the missing homework/classwork from days they were absent. Checking teams, email, asking a classmate or me are all great ways to find out what you missed. If a student is absent, they will be given time to make up their work for full credit. If a student does not make up their work in the allotted time, points will be taken off. Assignments/Homework submitted more than 3 days late will receive 50% credit
