Honor Societies, Clubs, Activities and Events

Babylon Junior-Senior High School is fortunate to be able to offer our students numerous opportunities to become involved in our school and community. Through honor societies, student government, clubs and events, there are many ways in which students can develop and nurture interests outside of the classroom.

Click through each section to see all that is offered, as within these offerings lie opportunities to forge connections, kindle interests, and sculpt their identities through these extracurricular pursuits. 

  • National Art Honor Society
    Advisor: Mrs. Schweider

    Grades: 10-12 (by invitation only)

    Meetings: Room 217 at 7:00 on 9/18, 10/9, 11/13, 12/11, 1/8, 2/12, 3/12, 4/9, 5/14

    Description: NAHS is an opportunity to: Inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability in art; foster excellence and dedicated spirit to the arts; for students to use their creative talents to better their school, community, or the world; bring art to the attention of the school and community; and increase an awareness of art in relation to other areas of the school curriculum.

     

    National Business Honor Society

    Advisor: Mrs. Reilly

    Grades: 10-12 (by invitation only)
    Meetings: Room 207 at 7:10 every other week

    Description: The primary purpose of the Business and Marketing Honor Society of New York State is to recognize those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a secondary business/marketing program. This is also a community service organization and will make donations to local charities.

     

    French National Honor Society

    Advisor: Mrs. Anderson

    Grades: 11-12
    Meetings: Room 314, Thursday AM and PM monthly (as needed)

    Description: The French National Honor Society recognizes student achievement in French language studies. Membership is earned with a 95 cumulative average in French as well as a 90 average overall. As an organization, we sponsor various fundraisers throughout the school year for our community as well as the global one in which we live.

     

    National English Honor Society

    Advisor: Mrs. Johanson and Mrs. Small

    Grades 10-12 (by invitation only)
    Meeting Dates: Library on Tuesdays at 2:35 once a month (additional meetings as needed)

     

    National Junior Honor Society 

    Advisor: Mrs. Small and Mrs. Greaney

    Grade 9 (by invitation only)
    Meetings: East Gym, every other Thursday at 7:10

     

    National Honor Society

    Science National Honor Society

    Advisor: Ms. Yevoli and Ms. Jones

    Grades 11-12 (by invitation only)
    Meetings: Room 280 Wednesdays monthly at 2:30

    Description: Science National Honor Society is a national organization honoring and encouraging student excellence in science. Institutions nation-wide recognize these members as scientific leaders in their high schools and communities.

    The objectives of our organization are:
    -To Encourage and recognize scientific and intellectual thought
    -To Advance students’ knowledge of classical and modern science.
    -To Participate in community service to encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind.

     

    National Social Studies Honor Society

    Advisor: Ms. Blair

    Grades 11 and 12 (by invitation only)
    Meetings: Library, Mondays at 7:15 once a month

     

    National Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica)

    Advisor: Mrs. Scharff

    Grades 10-12 (by invitation only)
    Meetings: Room 101, Thursdays at 2:30 once a month

    Description: The Babylon Chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society was founded in 2000 by Mrs. Scharff and has maintained a membership since then. Students in grades 10-12 with a cumulative average in Spanish of 95 or higher are eligible to apply for the honor society annually. Interested candidates should speak with their Spanish teacher or Mrs. Scharff regarding any questions.

    The group works collaboratively with the French Honor Society and the World Language Club to increase cultural awareness and promote good citizenship. Students work on fundraisers which are geared toward scholarships and charities.

     

    International Thespian Honor Society

    Advisor: Ms. E. Reilly

    Grades 9-12 (by induction)
    Meetings: Rowe Hall on Thursdays at 2:30 monthly

    Description: Troupe 6117 is the BHS chapter of this high school honor society for the dramatic arts, which awards membership based on outstanding work in theatre arts during two or more productions at Babylon Jr.-Sr. High School. (Membership is awarded only to grades 9 through 12, although grade 7 and 8 students may accumulate points towards membership.) Induction ceremony conducted in the spring.

     

    Tri-M Music Honor Society

    Advisor: Mrs. Turk

    Grades 10-12
    Meetings: Chorus Room, 2:30 once a month

    Description: The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 4,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world.

  • American Sign Language Club

    JH Art Club

    Description: The Jr. High Art Club is a club that helps to foster a love of creating art. We are involved in many community service projects during the year. This club is open to any Jr. high students who just want to drop in to finish projects they need to do for art class, want to create artwork of their own, or to help with larger community projects.

     

    SH Art Club 

    Advisor: Mrs. Schweider

    Grades 10-12
    Meetings: Room 217 on Tuesdays 2:30-3:30 (Oct-May and some evenings as needed Jan-May)

    Description: : SH Art club is a time for students to work on their own artwork, art contests, community service artwork, their college or NYSATA portfolio, and/or the Olympics of the Arts team projects. It allows time to sit with other student artists to brainstorm, collaborate, and just hang out with like minded students.

     

    Babylon Buddies Club

    Advisor: Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. O’Halloran

    Grades 7-12
    Meetings: Room 126 on Thursdays at 7:10

    Description: Students with developmental disabilities often enter the same building and walk the same hallways as their peers, but they are left out of social activities.  By introducing Babylon Buddies into our school, students are crossing the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without.

     

    Chamber Orchestra

    Advisor: Ms. Tomei

    Grades 9-12
    Meetings: Band Room on Tuesdays from 6-7pm.

     

    DECA

    Advisor: Mrs. Reilly and Mr. Storey

    Grades 9-12
    Meeting Dates: Chorus Room, Thursdays at 7:10am

    Description: To contribute to the development of skills necessary for careers in marketing, management, finance and entrepreneurship. Students have an opportunity to participate in a business environment of cooperation and competition. Students assist in fundraising and community service activities throughout the year. Each year, New York DECA supports a charity. 

     

    Environmental Club

    Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) Club

    Fishing Club

    Advisor: Mr. Russo

    Meetings: Room 281 on Tuesdays 2:40 (monthly)

    Description: Students will be enrolled in the LIRC High School Fishing League where they will compete with other high schools across Suffolk County. Students can go fishing anytime on their own and submit pictures of measured fish to the club president. Meetings will entail going over procedures to properly measure fish, ensuring that only fish that are in-season are being kept, current size limits, and sharing information as to what works best for catching certain types of fish.

     

    Gardening Club

    Advisor: Mrs. Schipf

    Music Ensemble Club

    Advisor: Mrs. Turk

    Description: 

    The Ensemble Club will be open to students in grades 7-12. This club will feature different types of instrument ensembles such as: Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet or Clarinet Ensemble. Participants will have the opportunity to rehearse collaboratively and perform at our Ensemble concerts.

    Rehearsal schedules will be determined based on the availability of the students in each group, with sessions offered both immediately after school and in the evenings.

    Leo Club

    Description: Come participate in youth volunteer opportunities! The Leo Club is part of Lion's Club International, and serves to facilitate a sense of community awareness and volunteerism among students at Babylon Junior-Senior High School.

    Description: The Junior High Math Team competes five times a year in the Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers’ Association league.

    Media Arts, Design and Production (Mixed Media Club)

    Meetings: Room 209 on Tuesdays at 7:00

    Description:  Utilize your 1:1 device to create stunning digital art, logos, and graphics for other clubs. 

    Design t-shirts, wall art, pins for Poem in Your Pocket Day, and delve into desktop publishing. This club collaborates with Panther Tales and Visions, crafting layouts for the school 
    newspaper, their digital website, and the printed Visions book.

    Description: We gather every week to unleash our creativity and write about anything and everything! 

    Our topics span diverse genres, cultures, periods, and more. Afterward, we team up with 

    the Media Arts, Design & Production Club to craft a school newspaper that's published 

    quarterly.

     

    Visions (Student Literature and Art Magazine)

    Description: For students passionate about visual art and writing, this is your place to shine. Channel 

    your inner Picasso or Shakespeare as we create both an online version and a printed 

    magazine, published in May. We're assisted by the Media Arts, Design & Production Club to bring both versions to life.

    Description: Students work together to design and create the yearbook. All students involved collect and edit photos of their fellow classmates from years past and present, as well as photograph and video record events from the current year in an effort to appropriately capture the school experience.
