Course Syllabus

  • Course Description:

This course begins the sequence of the state Regents curriculum: Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The topics of study deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships by contrasting them with each other and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend, and students engage in methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions. To meet the requirements of the Regents program, students will receive training on the use of the TI-84+ graphing calculator. Students will take the Algebra 1 Regents exam in June.  Successful completion of this course and a passing grade on the Algebra 1 Regents exam is a graduation requirement.

    Topics Covered:

    • The Building Blocks of Algebra
    • Linear Equations and Inequalities
    • Functions
    • Linear Functions
    • Linear Systems
    • Exponential Algebra and Functions
    • Polynomials
    • Quadratic Functions
    • Roots and Irrational Numbers
    • Functions and Their Transformations
    • Statistics

    Homework Policy:

Lessons, videos, class notes and practice problems will be assigned and completed in the OneNote for Windows 10 App.

    • Any part of the daily lesson that is not finished in class will be completed for homework (unless otherwise noted in class).

    Grading Policy:

A student’s quarter average will consist of the average of following 3 things (each weighted as described):

    1. Daily Lessons and Assignments (see “Daily Expectations”):  Students will be graded on a 0-1-2 rubric score and the average from all daily lessons and assignments for the quarter will be converted into a scaled score out of 100 (see below).  Those practice assignments that are graded will be posted in TEAMS.
      • This score will count as one exam grade.
      • You can keep track of these graded assignments in Teams under “Grades” as well as in e-school.
      • The running average will be calculated at the end of the quarter and input as a single test grade.

    2. Periodic Quarter Exams:  Students will complete exams that contain the required content of the course from each unit of study at appropriate periods of time.  These exams will consist of multiple choice and long response questions that will reflect those types of questions students would expect to see on the Algebra 1 Regents Exam.
      • Each of these exam scores will count as one exam grade.
      • You can keep track of these graded exams in e-school.

    3. Cumulative Quarter Exam: Students will complete a cumulative exam at the end of the current marking quarter that will contain the cumulative content from the quarter to date. This exam will consist of multiple choice and long response questions that will reflect those types of questions students would expect to see on the Algebra 1 Regents Exam.
    • This exam score will count as two exam grades
  • Course Description:

This course serves as a preparatory foundation for students planning to take Pre-Calculus and/or a Level 1 Math Course in College.  It focuses on reinforcing and extending essential algebraic concepts needed for success in higher-level mathematics.

This course is ideal for students who need to bridge the gap between Algebra II and more advanced concepts encountered in Pre-Calculus.

The course will begin by covering and taking a deep dive into prerequisite skills such as Real Numbers and Their Properties, Exponents and Radicals, Polynomials and Special Products, Rational Expressions, and Common Errors as they relate to the Algebra of Calculus.

    Topics Covered:

    • Equations, Inequalities, and Mathematical Modeling
    • Functions and Their Graphs
    • Polynomial Functions
    • Rational Functions
    • Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
    • Systems of Equations and Inequalities

    Homework Policy:

Most work will be completed in class.  It is the student’s responsibility to make up work missed in class when they are absent by completing it at home or during a free period.

    Grading Policy:

Throughout each quarter, there will be periodic graded assignments (a combination of both open book and closed book assessments) varying in length and point value.  A student’s quarter average will be based on a summation percentage of all graded assignments.  The final average will be the average of the four marking quarters. There will be no Midterm or Final Exam.
