This full year course is for seniors who would like to continue to take art but do not wish to take the AP studio in Art course. Student artists will be challenged to find their own style, be inspired by “professional” artists, and think conceptually. They will be asked to make revisions often as ways of challenging themselves. Their artwork will be on a larger scale than in the portfolio class. The emphasis will be on personal growth, process, and quality rather than quantity.

Topics may include Environmental art, Installation art, Found object art, Self-portraits, Altered perspective, or abstract art.

  • AP Studio in Art

    Grade: 12

Prerequisite: Art studio 3, Portfolio, or Studio in Media sequence

Student artists will develop and complete their focused interest for the AP exam during class. Research and conceptual projects will be completed as homework. Student artists will be required to continue working in their art journals/sketchbooks. They will be challenged to conceptualize, think abstractly, and incorporate “professional” artists or art history into their weekly observations. Student artists will critique and evaluate their lifelong artistic growth and analyze their artistic options for the future.

The final exam requires written analysis of all artwork so this will be worked on each week.

AP Courses offer students an opportunity to take a course taught at a college level. Intensive classroom work, independent study and research are an integral part of the classroom. Students must take the AP exam to receive weighted course credit: If a student doesn’t take the exam, it’s not possible to tell if he/she learned the content one would expect of an AP course. Requiring a student to take the exam ensures that the grade in the class is aligned with the student’s mastery of the course content knowledge.

Students are expected to pay the associated College Board for fee for the exam.
