Babylon AP Psych Students Get an ‘Eye-Full’

Posted Date: 12/05/24 (7:43 PM)

Students in Mrs. Kahn’s AP Psychology class at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently participated in an innovative interdisciplinary lesson involving the dissection of a sheep’s eyeball. The activity allowed students to explore the connection between physical anatomy and psychological functions.

The lesson was a collaboration between the high school’s science and social studies departments. Mrs. Kahn partnered with science teacher Mr. Sheltz to create the experience. While dissecting the sheep eyeballs, students learned about the functions of various eye structures and how they work together to enable vision. The lesson also explored how eyeballs function in nocturnal animals and how an animal’s physiology can influence its psychological behaviors, such as sleeping patterns.

“This was an engaging and fun lesson, and the students gained a great deal from it,” said Mrs. Kahn. “Special collaborations like this give our students opportunities to think critically and understand concepts in ways they might not have otherwise.”
